Think Tank: The Future of Digital Journalism

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Join us this coming Tuesday (1/18/2011, 6p-8p at the Sonesta Hotel Downtown Orlando) at the Digital Marketing Bistro for a look into the future as we discuss what we THINK will become of digital journalism.  Are you a paper reader…or maybe an RSS collector online?  Do you scour Facebook for your news or do you navigate to the front page of the New York Times?  These are all questions worth asking and worth discussing, but we can really only make educated guesses about where it’s heading.

The Digital Marketing Bistro is an extension of the Digital Marketing Revolution and you can learn more about it here –> http://digitalmarketingrevolution.com

You can RSVP on our Facebook Event at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=122009657868648

And if you can’t make it, you can always follow the conversation as we live blog it via Twitter.  Just search for the hashtag #dmbistro and feel free to jump in!  In fact, the conversation is still going on from 2 weeks ago http://twitter.com/#search?q=%23dmbistro

Hope to see you there!

Spurred by the popularity of web-browsing cellphones such as the iPhone and BlackBerry, Twitter has seen its traffic grow 900 per cent in just one year, as politicians, celebrities, athletes and even business
leaders have made headlines with their tweets.

The online social network received four million unique visitors for the
month of February, up from 123,000 from the same month last year. It’s
a massive jump from 14th most popular social-networking site on the
Internet to No. 3, right after behemoths Facebook and MySpace. In March 2009, a Nielsen.com
blog ranked Twitter as the fastest growing site in the Member
Communities category for February 2009. Twitter had a growth of 1382%, Zimbio had a growth of 240%, followed by Facebook with a growth of 228%.

David Saranga of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that on December 30, 2008, Israel would be the first government to hold a worldwide press conference via Twitter to take questions from the public about the war against Hamas in Gaza. The Los Angeles Fire Department put the technology to use during the October 2007 California wildfires. Some NASA projects such as Space Shuttle missions and the International Space Station provide updates via Twitter. Several 2008 U.S. presidential campaigns used Twitter as a publicity mechanism, including that of Democratic Party nominee and President Barack Obama. The Nader–Gonzalez campaign updated its ballot access teams in real-time with Twitter and Google Maps. Twitter use increased 43% on election day. The use of Twitter by victims, bystanders, and the public to gather news and coordinate responses to the November 2008 Mumbai siege led CNN to call it “the day that social media appeared to come of age.”

British celebrity Stephen Fry is also well known for having a large number of followers, and was reported in The Times as being the celebrity with the most followers on Twitter. However, the most followed celebrity today, and second overall after the CNN “Breaking News’” account, is American popstar Britney Spears. The College of Computing of Georgia Institute of Technology and the College of Engineering of University of Texas at San Antonio have been using Twitter to send information to their students. The Faculty of Psychology of the University of Vienna has been using Twitter for formative course evaluation.

Dissecting those tweets

dessecting-a-tweet

There’s a lot of buzz about Twitter these days and millions of people are flocking to join the conversation.  With messages (tweets) being limited to 140 characters, people have become very creative in finding ways to pack a lot of information in such a small space.  Unfortunately, for new people trying to dive in, the conversations and tweets they witness are confusing and often appear to be in a different language entirely.

Although this is only the beginning of the list of tweet types…it’s a good place to start if you’re a beginner on Twitter and you’re trying to understand what those tweets say!

The simple public tweet:

  • The Tweet – Working on a Sunday…checking out DeskAway…any fans out there?
  • About the Tweet – This is a comment made that will show up in the public stream of tweets.

The Reply Tweet:

  • The Tweet – Helping @emailstationery get visitors to their booth at #kwfr in #orlando
  • About the Tweet – This tweet is going to show up in the public stream of tweets.  It’s also going to let @emailstationery know that this tweet is meant for them.  In addition to the tweet showing up in the public stream, @emailstationery will also receive a copy in their “@ replies inbox.”  The #kwfr and #orlando are referred to as a hash tags and signify a trending topic on Twitter that people want to follow.  In this case it was the Keller Williams Family Reunion convention in Orlando.  Agents at the event were using this hash tag to find each other on Twitter during the entire weekend of events.

The ReTweet:

  • About the Tweet – RT is short for ReTweet.  You’ll see this when someone on Twitter wants to give credit to the person that originally sent out the Tweet.  This is commonly used when someone posts a link to a great article and others want to share it.  By inserting @mashable we are letting others know where the tweet originated.  The title of the article @mashable is posting a tweet about is HOW TO: Deal With Social Media Conflict and the direct hyperlink that will take you to the actual article is http://tinyurl.com/cvu8fs

The Post a link Tweet:

  • The Tweet – Delicious Fear and Loathing in Social Media: Awesome view on corporate misconceptions of social media http://tinyurl.com/cnrjz3
  • About the Tweet – This tweet contains a clickable link http://tinyurl.com/cnrjz3 combined with a comment about the link.  In this case, the link leads us to a slideshow, but links can lead to anything on the web.  This is a great way to share pictures, video, articles and websites with fellow Tweeple aka Twitter People.

How Twitter Changed My Life

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

I have been working on Twitter for the past several days.  Like many networking venues – the more you try it, the more it begins to make some sense.  I started to experiment with #hashtags and twitter search.  I am starting to understand how it takes on it’s real value once you begin to connect with other users.

Tonight, I found this presentation on Slideshare.  It does a great job of explaining how to understand, use and enjoy Twitter.  Let me know if you found this interesting.  Follow me @MattKruse
